Overview and Gameplay

Dream Land has lost its dreams after the Star Rod is broken and its pieces are scattered. Kirby travels through seven themed worlds, clears side-scrolling stages, defeats bosses, and uncovers the real threat behind the crisis.

This late NES release introduced Kirby’s defining Copy Ability system. Swallowing certain enemies grants powers such as Sword, Fire, Beam, Wheel, Stone, and UFO. Hidden switches unlock museums, arenas, Warp Star stations, and bonus games. Its polished presentation and inventive abilities have made it one of the console’s most highly regarded platformers.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Directions: Walk, run, crouch, climb, enter doors, swallow inhaled enemies, and begin flying.
  • A: Jump, swim, and flap upward while inflated.
  • B: Inhale, spit enemies, release an air pellet, or use the current Copy Ability.
  • Select: Discard the current ability.
  • Start: Pause the game.

Kirby has a health meter, can fly freely, and may recover lost abilities before they disappear. The game supports one player only.

Version Notes

This is the later U.S. PRG1 program revision, commonly identified as Rev 1. It includes minor code corrections without adding stages, abilities, or modes.
