Overview and Gameplay
Xybots is an unreleased NES prototype of Tengen’s planned home version of Atari Games’ arcade maze shooter. Players enter a robot-infested underground base as armed commandos, moving through corridor mazes, collecting supplies, and fighting the Xybot machines.
The game uses a behind-the-character maze view rather than a normal side-scrolling shooter layout. Stages involve finding exits, opening doors, using keys, collecting money credits, and spending them on upgrades such as armor, shot power, speed, map tools, wide shots, and extra lives.
Controls And Mechanics
- The Control Pad moves the character through the maze corridors.
- Button A fires the laser weapon.
- Button B is used with movement to turn through the maze.
- Select fires the Zapper, which can stun enemies while draining energy.
- Start pauses the game.
- Two-player mode uses split-screen play with both players moving through the maze.
Version Notes
This NES version was not released commercially. It is a prototype of a canceled Tengen port of the Atari Games arcade title.
