Overview and Gameplay
Shao Kahn uses the resurrection of Queen Sindel to invade Earthrealm, leaving a group of surviving warriors to stop its merger with Outworld. This Genesis conversion of Midway’s arcade fighter features 23 immediately selectable combatants, plus Motaro and Shao Kahn as bosses.
Players fight best-of-round matches using special moves, throws, combination strings, stage transitions, and finishing moves. Four ladder lengths determine the number of regular and endurance battles before the two bosses. Performance is measured through victories, remaining health, combo hits, and damage percentages rather than a traditional score.
Controls And Mechanics
- The six-button layout assigns separate buttons to high and low punches, high and low kicks, Block, and Run.
- Running consumes a rechargeable meter and helps fighters begin aggressive combo sequences.
- Finishers include Fatalities, Friendships, Babalities, and Brutalities.
- Two players can compete in standard versus matches or team battles. An eight-fighter tournament supports alternating participants, not eight simultaneous players.
Version Notes
The Genesis edition makes Rain and Noob Saibot selectable and includes hidden minigames. Compared with the arcade release, it removes Sheeva, Animalities, and Mercy while reducing speech, stages, transitions, and Treasure Chest rewards.
