Overview and Gameplay

A jetpack pilot defends human colonies on Jupiter’s moons in Archer MacLean’s Super Dropzone, a fast horizontal shooter descended from the 1980s computer game Dropzone. The SNES version expands the formula with bosses, special weapons, and multi-moon progression.

The player flies over scrolling alien terrain, shoots attackers, rescues stranded humans, and returns them to the Dropzone landing pad. Each moon has ten action levels followed by a guardian fight, leading through Io, Callisto, Ganymede, Europa, and a final assault near Jupiter.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Movement and firing direction are controlled together, making positioning and aim equally important.
  • Humans must be protected and carried back safely to complete levels.
  • Special tools include Strata Bombs, homing missiles, Rotamace, boost, and a temporary cloaking device.
  • Losing all humans makes the moon more dangerous, with stronger hazards and enemies.
  • The options menu supports multiple players, with play centered on score and survival rather than co-op action.

Version Notes

  • This is the European PAL SNES release.
  • The game was not released for SNES in North America or Japan.
