Overview and Gameplay

Fantasy warriors, beasts, and monsters fight for the throne in Death Brade, the Japanese Super Famicom port of Data East’s arcade game also known internationally as Mutant Fighter.

Instead of a standard martial-arts duel, fights play more like arena wrestling. The player moves around the ring, closes in for grapples, uses strikes and running attacks, and tries to empty the opponent’s health bar. The one-player tournament runs through unchosen fighters before the Dopple Ganger and Arch Mage battles.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Close range starts lockups, where button and direction combinations produce throws or stronger grapples.
  • Running attacks come from double-tapping a direction, then attacking while moving.
  • The Deathblow Meter fills as the player takes damage, enabling a stronger grapple when full.
  • Two-player mode is versus play, with stage select and same-character options.

Version Notes

This is the Japanese Super Famicom version of Death Brade. The original arcade game was also released internationally as Mutant Fighter, and the SFC port has fewer fighters and reduced audio compared with the arcade version.
