Overview and Gameplay

Cecil Harvey, dark knight captain of Baron’s Red Wings, turns against his kingdom after a brutal crystal raid and is drawn into a larger conflict involving Golbez, summons, airships, and the moon.

Final Fantasy IV is a story-driven RPG with towns, dungeons, world-map travel, random battles, fixed character roles, and a changing party of named heroes. It introduced the Active Time Battle system, giving menu combat a timed rhythm that became central to later Final Fantasy games.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Exploration uses menus for items, magic, equipment, status, party order, customization, and saving.
  • Combat uses timed commands such as attack, magic, items, defense, and character-specific abilities.
  • Party members have defined roles, including dark knight, dragoon, white mage, black mage, summoner, ninja, and other story-linked classes.
  • This is a single-player RPG with no versus or co-op mode.

Version Notes

This is the Japanese Super Famicom version with the J2e English fan translation. It is Final Fantasy IV, not the official North American SNES release titled Final Fantasy II or the later Easy Type version.
