Overview and Gameplay
Dr. Robotnik has captured animals and turned them into hostile machines. Sonic races through six Zones with three Acts each, destroying robots, collecting Rings, reaching checkpoints, and defeating Robotnik at the end of each Zone. Finishing eligible Acts with at least 50 Rings opens rotating Secret Zones containing six Chaos Emeralds. Original Mode uses Sonic’s original move set, while Anniversary Mode adds the stationary Spin Dash. Cleared Acts are saved, and previously reached Zones become selectable from the title menu.
Controls And Mechanics
The directional pad moves Sonic, changes speed, looks up or down, and starts a ground Spin Attack. A and B both jump and perform a mid-air Spin Attack; holding down with either button charges the Spin Dash in Anniversary Mode. Rings protect Sonic from one ordinary hit, while 100 Rings award an extra life. Monitors contain Rings, shields, invincibility, Power Sneakers, or extra lives. Losing all Rings before another hit, falling, drowning, being crushed, or exceeding an Act’s ten-minute limit costs a life. Enemies, remaining Rings, and clear time contribute to the score.
Version Notes
This Game Boy Advance conversion adds automatic saving, Zone selection, and Anniversary Mode. Its smaller display reduces forward visibility, while altered physics, sound, and frequent slowdown distinguish it from the original Genesis release.
