Overview and Gameplay
Data East’s B-Wings sends the experimental FX-1 fighter against the space fortress Gobunasu after its interchangeable Wing weapons are stolen. This vertically scrolling shooter spans 30 stages, with horizontal screen wrapping, hidden objects, warps, and bosses whose weak points reward careful weapon choice.
Controls And Mechanics
- Move in eight directions and fire the equipped Wing weapon.
- Discard an attached Wing when its attack pattern no longer suits the stage.
- Without a Wing, descend to the lower plane to avoid some airborne threats, while watching for hazards below.
- The Voltage item allows stored Wings to be selected while paused.
- Two-player mode is alternating, with players taking separate turns rather than playing together.
Version Notes
This Japan-only Famicom adaptation substantially redesigns Data East’s 1984 arcade game. It reduces the stage count from 45 to 30, adds new and concealed Wings, changes enemy formations and audiovisual content, introduces more secrets and warps, lowers the overall difficulty, and provides a defined ending.
