Overview and Gameplay
Rash and Zitz descend into Ragnarok’s World to rescue Pimple and Princess Angelica from the Dark Queen. Battletoads mixes belt-scrolling combat with platforming, vehicle sequences, swimming, races, and precision obstacle courses across 12 numbered stages and a final confrontation.
Progress depends on learning enemy patterns and surviving hazards with limited lives and continues. Flies restore health, hidden warps skip parts of the route, and scoring rewards combat techniques. The Turbo Tunnel is the best-known challenge, but later stages demand even tighter timing.
Controls And Mechanics
- Move in four directions, double-tapping left or right to run.
- Jump, attack, grab enemies, catch flies, and use stage-specific objects.
- Running attacks trigger exaggerated Smash Hit finishers.
- Two players fight simultaneously as Rash and Zitz, with friendly fire enabled.
Version Notes
The USA release is the demanding western version. The Japanese Famicom edition received balance adjustments. In the original USA cartridge, Player 2’s controls malfunction during Clinger-Winger, preventing normal two-player completion of that stage.
