Overview and Gameplay

Bill Elliott’s NASCAR Challenge puts the player inside a stock-car cockpit against fifteen computer drivers. Choose a Ford Thunderbird, Chevrolet Lumina, or Pontiac Grand Prix, then race at Daytona, Talladega, Sears Point, and Watkins Glen. Single events range from 10 to 500 miles, while the Championship Season runs eight races on Pro difficulty. Qualifying, drafting, fuel use, tire wear, damage, caution periods, and pit strategy all influence the result.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Use the directional pad to steer; with manual transmission, press up or down to shift after briefly releasing acceleration.
  • A accelerates, B brakes, and Start pauses the race.
  • Car setup includes transmission type, racing or qualifying engine, rear spoiler angle, gear ratio, and tire stagger.
  • Pit stops can add fuel, change tires, adjust setup, and repair damage. Practice drills cover drafting, passing, racing lines, and pitting.

Version Notes

The NES adaptation condenses the computer game into four licensed circuits and uses a registration-number password to continue the championship. The cartridge has no battery-backed save.
