Overview and Gameplay
Tokyo lies in ruins in 2036, and two boys accidentally release the demon Pazuzu from an RPG called Devil Busters. Armed with a Demon Summoning Program, the player explores a devastated city, enters first-person grid dungeons, and fights turn-based random battles.
Progress comes through exploration, bosses, story decisions, character levels, and demon recruitment. Talking to demons can add them to the party, while the Manor of Heresy combines two or three demons into stronger forms. Moon phases affect parts of the world, and summoned demons consume Magnetite while traveling through dungeons. Its post-apocalyptic Tokyo and branching choices helped shape the later Megami Tensei series.
