Overview and Gameplay

Jack trades his family cow for magic beans, then climbs enormous plants into a strange world of clouds, ships, monsters, and a demon king’s castle. Jumpin’ Kid: Jack to Mame no Ki Monogatari is a single-player action platformer built around vertical climbing, careful landings, and bean-based attacks. Many enemies are stunned rather than permanently defeated, so timing and positioning remain important as Jack advances through climbing stages, horizontal sections, bonus games, and boss encounters.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Directions move Jack and make him crouch.
  • A jumps, while B throws beans; holding B enables repeated fire.
  • At maximum bean power, combining directions with B fires forward and diagonally upward.
  • Bean upgrades increase shot capacity, while spring upgrades raise jump height. Taking damage removes both upgrade types.
  • Jack has a segmented life meter, restorative hearts, score bonuses, and nine continues.

Version Notes

This is the Japan-only Famicom release. A planned North American localization used the title Jack the Giant Slayer, but it was not commercially released.

Release And Credits

  • Released in 1990 for the Family Computer.
