Overview and Gameplay
Karateka sends a lone martial artist into Akuma Shogun’s fortress to rescue Princess Mariko. This Japanese Famicom port of Jordan Mechner’s Apple II original combines cinematic cutaways, side-scrolling movement, and deliberate one-on-one fights. Advance through the courtyard, fortress halls, and dungeon, defeating guards, surviving a diving bird, avoiding a falling gate, and confronting Akuma. There is no score-based objective: progress depends on preserving health and completing the rescue in a single run.
Controls And Mechanics
- Directions move the hero, change his stance, and select attack height.
- A performs kicks and B performs punches.
- While upright, B bows to an idle opponent. A returned bow lowers that enemy’s difficulty.
- Start begins the game and pauses during play.
- Running is faster, but taking a hit outside the fighting stance can be fatal. Backing away during combat allows health to recover.
Version Notes
The Japanese release uses the title カラテカ and localized names including Akuma Shogun and the hero’s Nanto Saishi Ken style. Its bow has a larger gameplay role than in the original, while some cinematic and audiovisual details were simplified for Famicom.
