Overview and Gameplay
Duke Barrik’s castle and its people are transported beneath the motionless Eternal Sun, leaving a four-character adventuring party to explore the surrounding valley and uncover its secrets. This original Sega Genesis RPG from Westwood Associates uses Dungeons & Dragons rules adapted for a three-button controller.
Wilderness travel uses an overhead view, while caves and buildings become first-person, grid-based dungeons. Outdoor encounters switch to turn-based tactical battlefields; dungeon combat happens in real time. Characters gain experience, improve their class abilities, collect equipment, and learn or memorize spells. The castle serves as a hub for supplies, healing, information, and quests.
Controls And Mechanics
- Directions: Move outdoors, navigate menus, or step and turn inside dungeons.
- A and B: Use the items equipped in the left and right readied slots. During outdoor combat, they also select and confirm attacks.
- C: Select the next party member; in combat it can cancel a choice or end the active character’s turn.
- Start: Open the Camp menu during exploration or combat options during outdoor battles.
The cartridge is strictly single-player and supports battery-backed saves. Saving and resting are restricted during dangerous situations, so equipment, spells, and healing should be prepared before entering a dungeon.
