Overview and Gameplay
Ryu, a survivor of the Light Dragon Clan, is drawn into a war against the Dark Dragons as they search for keys tied to a sealed goddess. Breath of Fire is Capcom’s first entry in its long-running fantasy RPG series.
The game uses classic top-down exploration and turn-based battles. Players travel across towns, castles, dungeons, and the world map, recruit allies, buy equipment, search for hidden items, and uncover Ryu’s dragon heritage while fighting monsters and bosses.
Controls And Mechanics
- The player moves Ryu and the party cursor, confirms choices, talks to people, opens chests and doors, searches nearby areas, and opens the command screen.
- Combat uses turn-based commands, including attack choices, magic, items, order changes, character changes, auto battle, and running.
- Up to four characters fight in the active party, with front and rear positions affecting attack and defense roles.
- Ryu’s dragon lineage, party abilities, fishing, hunting, and battery-backed saving are important parts of the SNES game.
- The game is single-player only.
