Overview and Gameplay

Ryu is forgotten by his own village as a child, then years later becomes a Ranger with Bow before a theft accusation pulls him into a larger conflict of dragons, demons, and religion. Breath of Fire II is a substantial SNES fantasy RPG and one of Capcom’s better-known 16-bit role-playing games.

The adventure uses top-down exploration, towns, dungeons, world-map travel, and turn-based battles. Players recruit allies, manage equipment and items, use spells and special abilities, change party formation, hunt, fish, and uncover Ryu’s dragon powers across a long quest.

Controls And Mechanics

  • The player moves characters, confirms commands, talks to people, opens doors and chests, and operates switches.
  • Combat uses commands such as attack, special, spell, item, run, switch, defense, and auto battle.
  • Up to four characters fight in the active party, with formations changing battle positions and defensive roles.
  • Character-specific field powers, hunting, fishing, township building, shamanization, and battery-backed saving are important systems.
  • The game is single-player only.
