Overview and Gameplay

Magic returns to a machine-driven world after the War of the Magi, pulling Terra, Locke, Celes, and a large rebel cast into conflict with the Gestahlian Empire. This USA SNES release is the game later known worldwide as Final Fantasy VI.

The adventure moves from a guided first half into a more open second half, with towns, dungeons, airships, random battles, party changes, and major character side quests. Its story, music, cast, and Esper system made it one of the defining RPGs on the console.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Active Time Battle gives combat a timed flow while still using commands such as attack, magic, items, and character abilities.
  • Espers teach magic and can improve character growth when equipped.
  • Relics, equipment, front and back row placement, and unique skills shape each character’s role.
  • The game is officially a single-player RPG, with a limited battle controller assignment option in configuration.

Version Notes

This is the USA revision of Final Fantasy III for SNES, the North American localization of Final Fantasy VI. Rev 1 is the later USA revision associated with fixes and minor text or item changes.
