Overview and Gameplay
Bub and Bob enter an enchanted forest to rescue their kidnapped friends. Each fixed-screen stage is cleared by trapping enemies inside bubbles and then bursting them, turning defeated foes into fruit and other scoring items.
The NES conversion contains a complete route of 113 stages, with passwords for continuing progress. Bubble currents, platform layouts, time limits, and enemy behavior make later screens increasingly demanding. Taking too long summons the invulnerable Baron von Blubba.
Controls And Mechanics
- Move with the directional pad, jump with A, and blow bubbles with B.
- Hold A when landing on a rising bubble to bounce upward and reach higher platforms.
- Pop several trapped enemies together for larger score bonuses.
- Collect EXTEND letters for an extra life, while candy, shoes, crosses, parasols, and other items provide temporary advantages.
- Two players can share each stage simultaneously, cooperate against enemies, and pursue the better endings together.
Version Notes
This NES edition expands the arcade structure with extra stages, altered layouts, passwords, Super Bubble Bobble mode, and multiple endings. Its North American manual also uses a localized rescue story that differs from the arcade original.
