Overview and Gameplay

Liu Bei, Guan Yu, and Zhang Fei begin by confronting the Yellow Scarves before building an army to pursue the unification of China. Destiny of an Emperor is a turn-based NES RPG adapted from Hiroshi Motomiya’s Tenchi wo Kurau manga.

Each general represents an army, so soldier totals act as health and influence combat strength. Up to seven generals may travel together, with five fighting at once. Victory brings experience, equipment, larger forces, and opportunities to recruit defeated enemy commanders. Towns, castles, gates, and short dungeons form a mostly linear campaign.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Control Pad: Move and choose menu options.
  • A: Open commands, confirm choices, and interact.
  • B: Cancel, revise battle orders, or stop All-Out combat.
  • Select: View party status. Start: Begin the game.
  • Tactics consume Tactical Points, while food is spent with every overworld step. Running out of food drains soldiers.

Version Notes

This North American release localizes the 1989 Japanese Famicom game Tenchi o Kurau with English dialogue, menus, and terminology. It includes battery-backed storage for up to three History Book save files.
