Overview and Gameplay

Five separate stories build toward one final campaign in Dragon Warrior IV. Ragnar investigates missing children, Princess Alena escapes royal life, Taloon works toward owning a shop, Mara and Nara seek justice, and the chosen Hero eventually unites them. Exploration spans towns, castles, caves, towers, and a changing day-and-night world, with random encounters leading to first-person turn-based battles. Experience, spells, equipment, gold, vehicles, and party recruitment drive progression across five chapters.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Directions: Move the party and navigate menus.
  • A: Open the command window, confirm choices, and advance text.
  • B: Cancel or return to the previous menu.
  • Start: Skip the opening sequence or access Adventure Logs from the title screen.
  • Select: Change battle message speed.

In Chapter 5, the player controls the Hero while companions follow selected tactics. A wagon carries reserves, allows party swaps in battle, and shares experience with riders.

Version Notes

This North American localization uses the title Dragon Warrior IV and NES-era names such as Taloon, Mara, Nara, Cristo, and Brey. It contains five chapters and retains the original companion AI rather than the later remakes’ full-party command option.
