Overview and Gameplay

After Hargon’s forces destroy Moonbrooke, the Prince of Midenhall searches for the Prince of Cannock and Princess of Moonbrooke. Together, the three descendants of Erdrick explore a large fantasy world and confront the sorcerer’s army.

Dragon Warrior II expands the first game’s solo adventure into a party-based RPG. Random, turn-based battles can feature several enemies, while progress comes through experience levels, equipment, spells, gold, and key quest items. Towns, castles, caves, towers, and a freely navigable ship make exploration central to the quest. The late game is notably demanding.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Directions: Move the party and navigate menus.
  • A: Open commands, confirm choices, and advance text.
  • B: Cancel choices or revise battle orders.
  • Start: Open the title options for starting or continuing an Adventure Log.
  • Each hero has separate statistics, equipment, inventory, and spell access. The Prince of Midenhall relies on physical strength, while his companions add mixed and advanced magic.

Version Notes

This USA localization uses the title Dragon Warrior II, while the title screen reads Dragon Warrior Part 2. It replaces the Japanese password system with three battery-backed Adventure Logs, adds an expanded introduction, and adjusts terminology and religious imagery for North America.
