Overview and Gameplay

Four heroes begin in different corners of Shellorado, each carrying an elemental shell needed to seal the revived ruler Fat Badger. Kaijuu Monogatari is a Japanese Famicom RPG built around switching between these separate adventurers, guiding them across an open world, and eventually bringing them together.

Random battles award experience and pearls for equipment and supplies. Heroes can meet to form parties, separate again, learn character-specific abilities, and unlock combination magic based on the current group. Combat supports automatic normal attacks or manual selection of attacks, magic, items, guarding, and special skills. Certain major encounters use a board-like Devil’s Trap sequence before individual battles.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Directions move characters, navigate menus, and select battle commands or targets.
  • A opens the field menu, confirms choices, and advances dialogue.
  • B cancels choices and can undo assigned battle commands.
  • Start begins a new or continued game from the title screen.
  • This is a single-player game; one player controls all four heroes through the switching system.

Version Notes

This is the original Japanese Famicom release, titled 貝獣物語. It had no official Western NES edition. The retail package included a world map, character figures, and a sealed clue letter tied to late-game progress.
