Overview and Gameplay

Project 4 has overrun Aslan, and the last airfield sends three pilots into a campaign of side-scrolling air combat. U.N. Squadron is Capcom’s SNES version of the arcade shooter known in Japan as Area 88.

The SNES release turns the arcade action into a home-console campaign. Players choose Shin, Mickey, or Greg, pick missions from the briefing room, then use earned money to buy aircraft and special weapons before the next sortie.

Controls And Mechanics

  • The aircraft moves freely around the screen while enemies attack from air and ground positions.
  • The Vulcan cannon is the basic weapon, while bought special weapons can be changed during flight.
  • Money from destroyed targets funds new planes and stronger loadouts.
  • Each pilot has different strengths, affecting power growth, weapon capacity, or recovery from damage.
  • The SNES version is single-player only; the arcade two-player mode is not included.

Version Notes

This is the European PAL SNES release. The Japanese title is Area 88, and the SNES version changes the arcade structure with mission selection, aircraft purchasing, and expanded weapon preparation.
