Overview and Gameplay

A wall of colored bricks keeps refilling from above, and the goal is to clear every removable brick and object before time runs out. BreakThru! is a SNES puzzle game from Spectrum HoloByte, unrelated to Data East’s older vehicle action game with a similar name.

The player moves a cursor across a 15-by-16 brick wall and removes connected groups of matching colors. Gravity pulls bricks downward, cleared columns slide sideways, and falling objects can be moved or dropped into place. Progress is built as a world tour through six cities, with four walls per city and higher difficulty on later tours.

Controls And Mechanics

  • Matching brick groups are removed with the cursor, while invalid selections cost points.
  • The Shifter controls whether columns slide left or right after gaps open.
  • Power objects include dynamite, rockets, and super bricks, while rocks, spiders, and cans complicate the wall.
  • Sledgehammers act as lives, and time bonuses reward faster wall clears.
  • The game supports one-player and two-player play.
