Overview and Gameplay

Scumocide and his mutant army threaten Earth, the Milky Way, and the universe, so Captain Commando leads a four-fighter team into battle. Captain Commando is the SNES version of Capcom’s arcade beat ’em up, with side-scrolling stages, waves of enemies, boss fights, and two-player co-op.

The playable team includes Captain Commando, Mack the Knife, Ginzu the Ninja, and Baby Head, each with different attacks and personality. Players move through nine hostile stages, grab enemies at close range, throw them, pick up weapons and food, and use special techniques when surrounded.

Controls And Mechanics

  • The directional pad moves the character and also controls menu selection.
  • The main attack button punches, kicks, grabs nearby enemies, and picks up items.
  • Jumping can be combined with attacks for aerial strikes.
  • Pressing forward twice makes the character dash, opening dash attacks and aerial dash attacks.
  • Special techniques clear space but cost energy when they hit enemies.
  • Two players can fight simultaneously in co-op, though the SNES port reduces the arcade game’s four-player format to two players.

Version Notes

The European SNES release keeps the title Captain Commando. Compared with the arcade original, the SNES version supports up to two players and uses the international character names Mack the Knife, Ginzu the Ninja, and Baby Head.
