Overview and Gameplay
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King follows Aragorn, Legolas, Gimli, Gandalf, Frodo, and Éowyn through separate campaigns based on the film. Each hero explores isometric areas, defeats enemy groups, completes objectives, and advances through locations such as Isengard, Minas Tirith, Mordor, and Mount Doom.
Combat awards experience used to raise character levels and improve active or passive skills. Weapons, armor, shields, cloaks, and amulets provide character-specific bonuses, while runes add effects to eligible equipment. Completing campaigns and special requirements unlocks harder settings, bonus maps, and additional playable characters.
Controls And Mechanics
The directional pad moves the hero, B performs weapon attacks, and A activates the equipped skill. L cycles skills, while R collects items and operates shops or other interactive objects. Character, inventory, equipment, and skill screens are opened with Start.
Health and Spirit govern survival and skill use. Kingsfoil restores health, Ent Water revives a defeated hero, and gems purchase equipment, supplies, runes, and upgrades. A corruption meter can summon a Nazgûl when it fills. Two linked Game Boy Advance systems support simultaneous cooperative play, with both heroes fighting through shared maps while retaining experience and equipment.
