Overview and Gameplay

Donkey Kong has taken Pauline to a construction site, and Mario must climb to the top to rescue her. The three-stage sequence features rolling barrels, moving lifts, fireballs, and a final structure supported by removable bolts. Clearing all three stages begins a faster, more crowded series that continues until Mario loses every life.

Game A provides the standard starting difficulty, while Game B begins with tougher enemy behavior. One-player and alternating two-player options track score and survival across the same stage set.

Controls And Mechanics

The Control Pad moves Mario and climbs ladders. A jumps and confirms choices, Start begins or pauses play, and Select chooses the title-screen mode. Pressing L and R together opens the system menu.

Mario earns points by jumping hazards, using hammers against barrels and fireballs, collecting Pauline’s belongings, and finishing with time remaining. The bonus counter falls during each stage; reaching zero costs a life. Enemy contact, hazardous falls, and thrown objects also remove a life. A score of 20,000 awards an extra life.

Version Notes

This Game Boy Advance release reproduces the three-stage Famicom and NES conversion. It adds persistent high-score saving, sleep mode, a system menu, and Link Cable support for alternating two-player play.
