Overview and Gameplay
Akira becomes a DemiKid after a demon-summoning ritual and receives a Demiloc for calling allied demons into battle. Guided by Gale, he travels through Dem, closes time rifts with Time Chains, and confronts the forces behind the crisis.
Exploration covers towns, caves, forests, temples, and altered locations. Random encounters lead to first-person turn-based battles with up to three active demons. Akira gains experience and Macca, while recruited demons expand the party through negotiation, fusion, relic combinations, and special training. BattleNet tournaments, casinos, side quests, and postgame Rebirth add optional activities.
Controls And Mechanics
The directional pad moves Akira and menu cursors. A confirms choices, talks, and inspects objects. B cancels or speaks with Gale, R rides Gale in eligible areas, Start opens the command menu, and Select displays the map.
Demons use physical attacks, magic, skills, and items. Clinics revive defeated allies, banks protect stored Macca, and defeat removes half of carried Macca before returning Akira to a visited clinic. A Game Link Cable supports demon battles, trading, and link fusion between two systems.
Version Notes
Dark Version follows Akira and Gale through Dem with its own story route, locations, demons, and items. Light Version follows a separate protagonist and connects through trading and fusion. The Japanese release was titled Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Children – Yami no Shō.
