Overview and Gameplay
Riviera: The Promised Land follows Grim Angel Ein after he loses his memories and joins the inhabitants of Riviera. The chapter-based story moves through stages made of connected screens, dialogue scenes, battles, timed events, and optional discoveries.
Exploration uses directional triggers instead of free movement. Move Mode advances between locations, while Look Mode examines objects and characters. Investigations may consume Trigger Points earned from strong battle ranks. Character growth comes from mastering compatible items, which unlocks skills and permanently raises statistics. Choices and battle participation affect companion relationships and determine the ending.
Controls And Mechanics
Turn-based battles use three active characters and four selected items. Each item provides different attacks, spells, healing actions, or support skills depending on its user. Most equipment has limited endurance and breaks when exhausted.
Attacks and damage fill a shared OverDrive gauge used for stronger OverSkills. Enemy actions build Rage and can trigger powerful abilities. Battle scores depend on performance and award Trigger Points by rank. Practice battles train item skills without consuming endurance, while defeat allows a retry with reduced enemy strength.
Version Notes
The Game Boy Advance edition adapts the WonderSwan Color original with revised graphics, redrawn character art, enhanced music, battle voices, additional event illustrations, balance adjustments, and a new ending.
